Battle Born Detachment #672

October 2018 Newsletter

Message from the Commandant

Commandant's Greeting:

I hope all members are enjoying the beautiful fall weather! Now is the time to check the house for any leaks that will cause the loss of heat during this coming winter. Also, be sure to get your vehicle checked and ready for the cold, wet winter weather.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our Toys for Tots program, call Ken, or Don with the time you are available to help.

Also, remember the dates of NOV 10th, and NOV 11th. These are for the cake cutting ceremony at the VA Hospital, and for the Veteran's Day Parade. I am hoping for a large turnout of members for both events.

Semper Fi,

Michael Miller

Minutes from the Previous Meeting:

Richard Olsen made a motion to have the minutes of the September 2018 meeting accepted as published. The members voted to approve the minutes

Correspondence:

Ken Santor reported that he had received a letter informing him that Ron Mosner had passed away while on a trip to Chicago. Ron Mosner was a long time member of the Black Mountain Detachment in Henderson.

Paymaster's Report

Ken Santor reported to all members that Total Income for September 2018 was $1580. Total Expense was listed as $405. These numbers do not list the income check to be received from John Pinocchio (“JP”) for our detachment work at the Reno Air Races. Ken will report the income when JP's check is sent to us. Any member wanting more info on finances, please contact Ken. The members voted to accept Ken's report as given.

Report of Member/Family in Distress:

David Walker reported that his wife had been in the hospital with a broken wrist. She is now home, and doing better. All members wished her a speedy recovery.

Report of Officers:

Ken Santor spoke about the Gun Show to be held at the Convention Center on October 13-14. Setup will be on Friday, October 12th, at 13:00.

Don Enea spoke about the Horseshoe Tournament to be held in Pahrump, later this month. Don will attend as a participant, he also advised this event is approved by the National Board. He will be in about 5-7 games, with each game having 40 horseshoes thrown by each person. We wish Don good luck in his games.

Unfinished Business

Ken Santor again briefed all members on the National MCL rules concerning annual dues for members that are not Life Members. Our detachment has 49 Life members according to the National roster, sent to Ken dated 06/30/2018. There were 9 unpaid annual members listed. Discussion followed, with various suggestions given by members on how to get all members dues paid to be current.

In the past, each member paid his dues for one calendar year, and the year could start on any month. Now, the new rule states the annual membership should be the same date for all annual members, and this is causing some problems on how to pay for this correction to the same date.

New Business

Ken Santor and Don Enea both briefed all members on this year’s Toys for Tots Program. The start date for TFT is October 1stof each year, and the program ends about 15-18 DEC of each year. Volunteers are needed to place and collect collection boxes at various locations throughout Reno/Sparks.

Items to be collected are new toys, books, small "stocking stuffers", small dolls and stuffed animals for children. Members having a full sized truck are needed to collect full boxes from locations around the area. Usually, most collections are done on the weekend, but not always.

The warehouse for this year is on Moana Lane across from the Reno Paint Mart, and is just east of the Popeye's fast food restaurant on Moana. Any member could also work in the Moana office, by answering the phone, etc. Please contact Ken or Don if available.

Good of the League:

  • Commandant: Mike Miller, and Marcel Nino de Guzman

  • Senior Vice Commandant: Russ Wyant

  • Junior Vice Commandant: OPEN

  • JAG: David Walker

  • Paymaster: Ken Santor

  • Chaplain: Richard Olsen

Obituaries

Ron Mosner

On Friday, 28 September, 2018, we lost our dear friend and mentor, Sgt. Ron Mosner. A highly decorated Marine in the Korean War, Ron had remained on active duty for a total of eight years. He then returned to the Chicago area and became a highly-regarded master carpenter and family man. Ron and his wife, Nancy, retired to Nevada in 1996 and he was the driving force in reviving the Black Mountain Detachment (Henderson) of the Marine Corps League.

Over the next two decades he served in every capacity within the detachment, and when called upon, served as paymaster and commandant for the Department (state) of Nevada. He was a driving force in raising funds for his beloved Devil Pups of Southern Nevada and served on the board of the Youth Leadership Authority. Ron's dedication and unwavering efforts led to his selection as the Nevada Marine of the Year. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and fellow Marines.

God Bless you, Ron, and Semper Fi.

Lore of the Corps

U.S. 4×4 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAP)

US-4x4-Max

Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles are designed specifically to withstand improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and ambushes. From 2007 until 2012, the Pentagon’s MRAP program deployed more than 12,000 MRAPs in the Iraq War and War in Afghanistan.

There is no common MRAP vehicle design, as there are several vendors, each with its own vehicle. MRAP vehicles usually have “V”-shaped hulls to deflect explosive forces from land mines or IEDs below the vehicle, thereby protecting vehicle and passengers. MRAPs weigh 14 to 18 tons and are 9 feet high.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 1930 at the VFW Post 9211 located at 255 Burris Lane, Reno, NV 89509
