I wish to
take the time to wish all members a great Marine Corps
Birthday this November 10th, and to also wish each member
and their family a very Happy Veteran's Day on November
11th. This month is special for all Marines due to these two
dates, and the sacrifices that were made by those that
served before us.
Also, now
is the time to start to check our cars/trucks for winter
driving, and to have our houses prepared for winter
cold/snow. Clean your gutters, change the filters on the
furnace, get your medicine re-filled, etc.
The
prediction by the medical community is for this year’s flu
to be quite strong, so be sure to receive a flu shot if you
and your family have not yet received it.
Semper Fi,
Paul
Weller, Commandant

Minutes
from the Previous Meeting:
Richard Olsen made a motion to
have the minutes of the October 2017 meeting approved as handed out. The
detachment voted to approve this motion.
Correspondence:
Ken Santor
reported that a member of the detachment that had left to
join the Reno Elks in 2013 has sent a letter asking to be
allowed to rejoin the detachment. Ken is working with him.
Ken Santor
reported on a letter he received from the Reno Veteran's Day
Committee. Our position in the parade will be #5, and after
the parade our detachment members will go to the Atlantis
Buffet for lunch.
This year
there will be a total of 85 groups in the parade, which will
be from California St to 5th St along Virginia Street.
Ken Santor
read to all members a letter that Richard Olsen had received
from the Reno VA Hospital thanking our detachment for our
summer youth program participation, and of the awards
received by some of our summer helpers.
Richard Olsen
presented to Ken Santor a letter from the Reno VA Hospital
confirming Richard's re-appointment as the MCL
Representative to the VA Reno Volunteer Office.
Paymaster
Report
Ken Santor
briefed all members that JP had sent our detachment a check
for $1,000 for our help at this year's Reno Air Races. Ken
will give a detailed report at a later meeting.
Report of

Report of
Officers:
Don Enea
informed all on the setup for the display that we will have
for the Veteran's day parade. Don will drive his truck with
a moveable mechanical Santa run by power anchored in the bed
of his pickup truck. As the Santa moves a tape recording in
multiple languages sings Christmas songs in foreign
languages. Ken will walk in front of the pickup with another
member, and they will hold our information banner.
New Business:
Don Enea
informed all of the upcoming Toys for Tots events. On 18
Nov, there will be a drive at the Damonte Ranch Wal-Mart
from 10-3pm. Volunteers are needed, so please contact Ken or
Don. On 24 Nov (Black Friday) Toys for Tots will have a
drive to raise toys at the Mae Anne Wal-Mart from 10-3pm.
Volunteers will also be needed on this date.
On 9 Dec, at
the Three Nations Wal-Mart off 2nd Street near the Grand
Sierra Resort volunteers will again be needed as this will

At the
December 2017 meeting, voting will be held, followed by the
swearing in of the new officers. This will be a short
meeting, and then all persons will proceed to the assembled
tables for our Christmas Dinner. Please bring a new, wrapped
toy to the dinner, and these will be added to the Toys for
Tots distribution.
Ken Santor and
Paul Weller again briefed all on free telephones for
veteran's that are hard of hearing. Both Ken and Paul have
these phones, and enjoy them very much. Any member wishing
to apply for one of these land line phones, please contact
Ken or Paul. The representative for this program here in
Reno is a very nice lady named Vicki.
Karl Rodriguez
next introduced four of the Devil Pups that our detachment
sponsored for the 2017 summer program. These four candidates
went to the front of the meeting hall, and proceeded to
describe their experiences at Camp Pendleton.
Karl talked to
each person, and asked them different questions. All the
Devil Pups presented themselves in a sharp manner and spoke
clearly. Each said they enjoyed the experience at Camp
Pendleton. Next the detachment members asked questions.
Karl and the
four devil pups presented a plaque to the detachment to
thank all members for their help.
Ken Santor
reported that the detachment has donated $100 to the "Hands
of Hope" Veteran's Food Bank for both the Thanksgiving and
Christmas Holiday, for a total donation of $200. This money
will help any veteran/family receive their food boxes, if
they need some help over the holidays.
David Walker
handed out to the Devil Pups some Marine Corps Breast Cancer
pins for them to wear on their jackets. These are the same
pins that David and his wife, handed out to all members
about a year ago.
Ken Santor and
Richard Olsen again reminded all members to attend the
Marine Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony to be held at the Reno
VA hospital on November 10th, after the noon meal. We want a
large turnout to help distribute the slices of cake to all
persons at the hospital. Uniform is black socks, black
slacks, black shoes, MCL Red Jacket, and Red cover.
REMEMBER that
we will have our Christmas Dinner after the new officer
swearing in ceremony at the DEC meeting. All hands bring a
pot luck item to share with others, and also bring a new toy
to leave on the Toys for Tots table.
