I want to thank all members for their attendance at
the November meeting. This month is especially
important since November 10th is the USMC Birthday,
and November 11th is Veteran's Day.
Also, this year, 2013 is the 50th anniversary of
President John F. Kennedy’s death. I'm sure all of
us remember exactly where we were when the news of
the shooting was flashed around the world. Life is
precious, and all of us need to protect and honor
our families, communities, and country.
Finally, let me wish each and every member, and
their family a blessed and peaceful Thanksgiving. We
live in the greatest country on the earth, and even
with all the faults in our country, we as free
citizens have an extremely long list of things to be
thankful for.
Semper Fi, Fred Vigil

Meeting
Minutes for November 5, 2013
Marine
Corps League, Battle Born Detachment 672, held at VFW
Post 9211, 255 Veterans Memorial Drive, Reno, NV
89509-5429
Richard
Olsen made a motion for the detachment to accept the
October 2013 newsletter as published by the Web-Sgt. The
motion was passed by the membership without dissent.
Richard
also asked the members about the timing for publishing
the newsletter, and discussion followed. Richard will
try to get the monthly newsletter out sooner, and
forward it to the Web-Sgt, John Glatthar, so it can be
formatted and emailed to all.
Correspondence:
Ken Santor
briefed all members on a letter received from the Dept
of NV about changes to the Dept Bylaws that will be
discussed/introduced at the Mid-Winter Conference in
January 2014. Several changes were mentioned including
changes to the scholarship rules.
A letter
that was received from the Commandant of the Pahrump
Detachment was read by Ken Santor. This letter stated
that leadership of the detachment officers is critical
to the operation of each detachment. All members were
encouraged to attend meetings, participate in all
activities, run for detachment positions, recruit new
members, and generally communicate with each other.
Discussion followed. Goals for the detachment have to be
set, and once set, have to be followed up and completed.
Ken
informed all members of a proposal from National MCL to
raise the annual MCL dues for new/renewal members by
$2.00 per year. This will take effect on January 2014.
Ken stated that our membership roster had 66 Life
members, and these members would not have any increase.
Ken
received an email from Lupe Barry concerning a article
in the Reno Gazette that had our detachment
advertisement listed under the Senior Section of the
paper. Discussion followed, and David Walker suggested
that we list information on our detachment activities in
the Sparks Newspaper. We need new members, especially
younger Marines who have just been discharged from
active duty. Fred stressed that the newspaper needs to
highlight our activities.
Ken and
Fred advised all members on the upcoming Veteran's Day
Parade and associated activities. Ken coordinated with
the City of Reno on our participation, and the
detachment decided to have a post parade lunch at Famous
Dave's BBQ.
Our
detachment role in the Toys For Tots Program was
reviewed by Ken Santor and Don Enea.
Ron Breaux
made a motion for the detachment to give $50 to the TFT
fund, and Fred Vigil said he would donate $50 from his
own pocket.
Ken
informed all that Pat Warmouth had sent the detachment a
“Thank You" card for our participation in the Fernley
Cemetery Ceremony for John Warmouth.
Paymaster’s
Report:
Ken Santor
provided a report on the October finances. Total income
was $2782, including a check from John Pinocchio (“JP”)
of $1162 for our hours worked at the Air Races. Total
Expenses were $1478.81. Any member wanting more info on
the finances, please contact Ken.
Report of
League/Family Members in Distress:
Discussion
was held on the passing of our member, John Warmouth.
Richard
Olsen asked David Walker to inform all members about
David's medical procedure done to place a stent that was
needed to increase blood flow to David's heart. David
gave a complete description of this procedure, and how
happy he was with the treatment that the VA gave him.
Report of
Officers:
Ken Santor
informed all that our detachment had purchased tickets
for the USMC Birthday Ball that will be held at the
Grand Sierra Resort Hotel. Ken still has tickets for
sell, and any member wanting to attend the Ball, please
contact Ken.
This year's Ball is sponsored by the
Bridgeport Detachment.
Report of
standing/special committees:
Ken Santor
and Don Enea briefed all on the current status of the
Toys For Tots Program. This was a more detailed report
than the information given under the Correspondence
section. Several dates have been set for the TFT
collection at Wal-Marts. A tentative one is December 7,
at the Damonte Ranch store. Further information will be
given at the December meeting.
Discussion
also included the Sparks Christmas Parade on December 7,
and a TFT drive at the Kietzke Lane Wal-Mart. We will
also sell Hot Sauce. Don Enea asked all members to check
the TFT boxes at any Wal-Mart they enter, and to please
call him or Ken when these boxes are about half full.
These boxes need to be emptied to prevent any toys from
being taken, and all collections should be done with the
knowledge, and cooperation of store employees.
All
members collecting the toys must be in proper MCL
attire, and must introduce themselves to the store
manager. The Sam's Club store will not participate this
year. Ken stated he has received a 6600 sq foot mini
storage unit to hold the toys. A date for a TFT
collection and Food Drive to be held at the GSR will be
announced later.
Ken Santor
informed all that the Korean War Vets have been asked to
talk to school kids on November 12th.
Richard
Olsen briefed all that he had coordinated with the staff
at the VA Hospital for the November 10th Cake Cutting
Ceremony. Fred's wife, Jan, and his daughter are baking
and decorating the cakes. All members will meet at 13:00
hours in the dining hall of the CLC Unit at the VA
Hospital, and the uniform will be formal MCL attire. The
ceremony will be approximately 1½ hours.

The
December meeting will be the last time for additional
nominations before voting. Voting will take place at the
December meeting, followed by the installation ceremony.
The Christmas Dinner will follow. The members are
reminded to bring a new toy to the dinner.
Richard
Olsen opened discussion to have the detachment fund the
Veteran's Food Bank with a $200 donation for
Thanksgiving and Christmas. Discussion was held, and the
detachment voted to fund the $200.
Good of the
League:
Mike Rios
spoke to the detachment about some of the funerals
recently held in our city. These included the Marine
shot at the Bank of America, and the school teacher shot
in Sparks. Also, some local families want a Marine
presence at a family, private ceremony. Mike has been
assigned to I & I Staff, and is familiar with such
procedures. Mike is trying to establish a MCL Honor
Guard, not a Color Guard. It will start out small, maybe
3 members, and later it is hoped to expand to a full
contingent. The guard is forecast to be composed of
young, recently discharged Marines, wearing their Dress
Blue Uniform. Discussion was held on this idea.
Bill Reed
attended Marine Sherry's (the Bank of America gun shot
victim) Ceremony, and Richard Olsen and Tom Bickert
attended the memorial for CPL Irwin, a WW2 Reno Marine.
Mike has
had some coordination with the NV Nat'l Guard, and has
talked with units from Sacramento. So far this idea is
in the planning/implementation phase. Mike stressed that
this Honor Guard Unit will/must be professional, squared
away, look sharp, and be available on short notice. More
discussion to be held at later detachment meetings.
Mike Rios
told all members he is going to Camp Pendleton to spend
time with his son, Nick, and that Mike would pick up any
items for MCL members from the BX. Nick will be
receiving new orders shortly, and Mike wants to visit
while he can.
Ken Santor
informed all members that Pat Warmouth has a new email:
(warmouth@sbcglobal.net).
Fred
briefed all on the detachment's participation at the
Reno Home Show.
Ken Santor
spoke of the next Gun Show to be held on December 21 -22
DEC.
Ken Santor
informed all that he had some extra MCL pins, if any
member needed any.
Paul
Weller gave a short USMC history lesson as to how the
Marines became assigned to the Navy Department, instead
of the Army. It appears that a coin toss was involved.

Marine Humor
There was a Marine
who had four daughters. He was in a habit of worrying
about his daughters and always answered the door with a
sawed-off shotgun. One night he hears a knock at the
door and finds a young man standing there. The young man
says: "My name is Freddy. I've come to pick up Betty.
We're going out for spaghetti. I hope she's ready." The
Marine thought that was cute so he let them go out.
Pretty soon another
knock on the door and another young man was there. He
said: "My name is Lance. I've come for Nance. We're
going to a dance. Is she ready by chance?" Again the
Marine thought it was cute and let them go.
Soon another knock
on the door with yet another young man standing there.
He said: "My name is Moe. I'm here to get Flo. We're
going to a show. Is she ready to go?" Once again the
Marine thought it was cute and he let them go.
Again there was a
knock on the door and a young man was standing there. He
said: "My name is Chuck." The Marine shot him.
